Physical Education plays an important part in our Woodland experience with the Olympic and Commonwealth values (excellence, respect, friendship, inspiration, determination, equality and courage) embedded into our school life. PE at Woodland aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. We teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.
Our PE programme provides an engaging and challenging curriculum which incorporates a variety of physical activity to ensure all children develop the confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. We have a strong emphasis on swimming and cycling, as these are skills for life. We strive to ensure that all children are competent swimmers by the end of Y6. To achieve this, we prioritise our Sport Premium and have five swimming sessions weekly which is above and beyond the minimum government guidance.
We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being.
We have our Woodland Whippet (running) club which is inclusive to all. The Woodland Whippets consists of present and past children, members of staff, parents and other family members. They train weekly, take part in 2km and 5km Park Runs, fun runs and competitions. We also take our elite athletes to Wigan Harriers and who compete in regional and county events.
We aim to ensure all students leave the school possessing the skills, motivation and knowledge to enjoy a lifelong engagement with sport and physical activity. We trust that our broad and innovative PE curriculum will allow students to develop their love of movement and sport well beyond their time with us.
