Year 5
What a fantastic start we have had so far in year 5! The children have been impressing us with their enthusiasm for learning and their positive attitudes towards one another. Their ability to work independently and problem solve, makes us very excited about the challenges that lie ahead. We are confident that it is going to be a very successful year!
In respect to this, we have set out some of our key targets of what we expect the children to achieve by the end of year 5.
Children are expected to read at home every night and therefore bring their reading folder in every day. In year 5, children will have to be able to summarise main points within their reading and discuss their thoughts. It is important for them to be able to compare different text and discuss and evaluate how authors use language.
All children have received a set of spellings at the beginning of the year and are reminded daily, what week of spellings they need to be practising.
In year 5, Maths can become very challenging when children still struggle to recall their times tables (and their division facts) and therefore, we see this as the key in Maths. By the end of this year, children will be expected to write, order and compare numbers up to 1 000 000 and determine the value of each digit. Problem solving is very important and this will involve multiplication, division, addition and subtraction
multi-step problems that include decimals and fractions.
