SEND

My name is Mrs Lacey  and I am the Special Educational Needs Co- ordinator (SENCO).  I am joined by Ms Middleton (SENCO assistant), Miss Tyrer (SEN teaching assistant) and Miss Carroll (SEN teaching assistant)

If you have any concerns about your child please come and talk to us.  We are based in the room outside the office/reception area and would be happy to talk with you at anytime.

Together we provide support for children in our school with special educational needs.  There are many different interventions that we use to help each child reach their full potential.

Active Literacy:  This programme offers a series of timed exercises which together build the foundation skills needed for automatic, fluent and accurate reading and spelling.   The Active Literacy sessions cover alphabet knowledge, (consonants and vowels) letter names and sounds, rhyme and alliteration and basic reading and spelling.

Speech and Language Therapy:  Many of our children receive speech and language therapy to support them with  their communication skills.  We have a therapist who visits school regularly and works closely with school to provide the best support for our children.  We also have a speech and language trained teaching assistant who works each week with the children with speech and language plans.

Social Skills:  We run social skills groups to support children in developing their social interactions with other children.  The social skills group covers friendship, communication, emotions and practising skills needed for the real world.

Basic skills:  We run a basic skills group for children who need support with basic Literacy and Numeracy.

Memory Boost:  We run memory boost groups to support children in developing strategies to enhance their memory.

Rapid Writing:  We run Rapid Writing groups at all different levels to support children who struggle with their writing.

Specific Learning support:  We work 1:1 with children who have specific learning difficulties.  Their programme is individual to their needs.

Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy:  We work closely with therapists to develop an appropriate programme for children needing OT and Physiotherapy.   We work on the children's individualised programmes at school.

Fine and gross motor skills difficulties:  We work 1:1 with children who need support in developing their fine and gross motor skills.

The way children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) are supported has changed dramatically over the past couple of years. The new approach to SEN education is set out in Children and Families Act (2014)which aims to improve outcomes and aspirations for SEN children by ensuing that they receive and achieve the best from their educational experience. The Act also states that a child with an existing statement will have an Educational, Health and Care plan (EHC) instead. EHC Plan will support a child from birth to 25 thus extending the period of support currently available through statements. It is the responsibility of Lancashire County Council to transfer Statements to EHC Plans and the Council is undertaking the work in phases.
